Cambie #2

OK, so in my last post I said I'd show you my other Cambie soon.  Let it be known,  I suck at "soon".   This one I cut out in late June or early July in the old house and finally assembled a month or so ago in the new digs.   It just needed a few fit tweaks to address things that bugged me in the first one.  I think the a-line skirt is more flattering than the fuller skirt on me too.

Heh, awkward-pose.

I think this dress is perfectly suited for a very subdued luau!  The fabric is cotton sateen from JoAnns.

I expect I'll be making this again at some point -- I'd like a solid-colored version.  Probably I'll move the shoulder straps in a smidge next time.  My bra straps are covered, but only barely!  Otherwise, the fit is good enough for me.  Changes from the original version include adding bodice length, and a little extra room at the waist.  I also did the straight-across neckline variation instead of the sweetheart neckline.

The lining is cotton batiste.  Et voila, the insides.  Sorries for the wrinkles and the bad lighting.

And finally, a happy dog shot.  I like photos of me and my dog far more than photos of just me, even when they don't show my sewing efforts to particularly good advantage.  Though perhaps you can tell that there's not much gapping at the neckline even though I am leaning forward, which is a Good Thing.  Also, you probably figured it out already, but my dog is amazing!

In other irrelevant news, we put out our Halloween decorations!  We kept it low-key because that seems to be what the neighbors are doing.  We are new, we want to fit in.  :)   I've actually had the skelemingos for years with nowhere to put them.  Hooray for finally having a yard!  (Next step ... have something growing in the flower beds instead of just mulch, lol.)

  1. It looks really great! I like the a line skirt on you and I can't believe you found such great fabric at Joann's. I have just started getting into Sewaholic pattterns and I think I might try the Cambie next.

I'm so jealous of your pool and how warm it looks there!

    1. Thanks! I have found a lot of good fabric at JoAnns -- you just have to buy it when you see it and figure out what to do with it later! It is still pretty warm here -- high near 90F today -- but believe me we pay the price in the summertime!

  2. Lovely dress, very chic. I recently got the Sewaholic Alma and I can see why everyone raves about Tasia's patterns, they are beautifully drafted.

  3. So pretty :) I love Cambie and want to knock it off with the vintage pattern I have that's (almost) a dead ringer! :)
Yours looks great and cute dog, haha :)

    1. Thanks! I am always happy when I can manage to get the FRONT end of the dog facing the camera too. :D

  4. I was looking at this dress the other day on Flickr before I started mine. Me likey! I think you're right - the A-line is much more flattering on you. I loved the first version, but I have to agree that this one is much better!

    1. I think for me, it's the subtle fit adjustments that make the biggest difference -- I cannot stand a tight waistband, and that's how the first Cambie fit me. It looks fine, and for some folks would feel fine too. Comfort always wins over cute for me (but I'd prefer both of course).

I love your Cambie too -- I may have to earmark my piece of that fabric for a Cambie. We'll just have to make sure we don't wear them on the same day in the same city, lol.

  5. What a cute dress! Moving is a totally acceptable reason to take a long hiatus from blogging. And that wasn't really that long, anyway.

I saw those skeleton flamingos at Joann's! I love them!

If it makes you feel better, I'm trying to finish up a dress that I meant to wear for the Fourth of July, except the pattern turned out to be a complete disaster so not only did I have to alter it over and over, I had to do several test muslins and then a trial-run dress (wearable, but not using my good fabric). I'm still trying to finish the trial-run dress! I think I can get it done this week; my motivation is that I want to wear it to Bayou City Arts Festival this Saturday. Famous last words, right?

    1. JoAnns has skelemingos!?! I will have to check back at my honking giant new-to-me JoAnns -- I didn't manage to see the whole store last time I was there. Though I guess I don't need any more ... husband has suggested that the current pair should not linger in the front yard past Halloween anyhow.

I didn't realize that Bayou City Arts festival was this weekend ... it has been a long time since I have been even though I used to live really nearby. Good luck with your dress! This weekend looks like it will be great for outdoor festivals in all parts of the greater Houston area.
